Panoramic X-Rays Q & A

What is a panoramic X-ray?

In dentistry, X-rays are used for a number of reasons in making diagnoses and settling on the proper treatment. While there are many different kinds of X-Rays, a panoramic X-ray is an important and commonly used tool. A panoramic X-ray is a two-dimensional image of the entire mouth, capturing all of the teeth, the upper and lower jaws, and the surrounding areas at once.

As with other X-rays, the image is made by exposing the targeted area, the mouth in this case, to a small dose of ionizing radiation. The panoramic X-ray takes this image of the curved structure of the mouth and displays it in a flat perspective. The team at Comfort Care Dental utilizes panoramic X-rays for a wide range of dental conditions.

What is a panoramic X-ray used for?

The panoramic X-ray is a very important diagnostic tool for dentists. Since it covers a wide area, it can provide a lot of information about the sinuses, bone abnormalities, tooth positioning, and more. Panoramic X-rays are commonly used for issues such as:

  • Sinusitis
  • Disorders of the jaw
  • Oral cancer
  • Jaw tumors
  • Impacted teeth
  • Wisdom teeth
  • TMJ disorders
  • Periodontal disease
  • Cysts

This is a partial list. The team at Comfort Dental Care will determine if a panoramic X-ray is right for your situation.

What can I expect at my appointment?

At the procedure, you may need to remove any jewelry or eyeglasses from the region that is being studied. In addition, as with any other X-ray, you may be required to wear a lead apron to reduce radiation exposure to other parts of your body. Once you’re prepared, the technician will position you correctly in front of a receiving film.

The X-ray machine will then rotate in a semi-circle around your mouth as it takes the X-ray. It’s important that you remain still while the image is being taken so the X-ray can create a clear result. The team at Comfort Care Dental will be happy to answer any of your questions during your appointment.
