Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are replacement teeth mounted to a plastic base. You can remove your denture at will. Many people choose dentures because they give them a fast and easy way to restore their smile.

Other replacement teeth — like bridges — affect your surrounding teeth, and some — like dental implants — require an invasive placement process. Dentures give you a way to get a full, beautiful smile relatively quickly without any uncomfortable procedures.

What are the different types of dentures?

When you think of dentures, you probably think of the full set of top and bottom teeth. While this provides an example of a type of dentures, these replacement teeth can serve you even if you still have natural teeth in your mouth. The two types of dentures are:

Full dentures

These dentures are what most people picture: a full arch of teeth attached to a gum-colored plastic base. You can get full dentures to replace your top arch of teeth, your bottom arch, or both. The full arch of teeth forms a seal with your gums, holding the denture in place.

Partial dentures

Dentures give you a relatively fast and easy way to replace a missing tooth or set of teeth, too. If the denture replaces only one or a few teeth, it’s considered a partial denture.

Most partial dentures are held in place with a plastic base that fits in your mouth, anchoring the teeth. In some cases, a metal framework may help to stabilize the base.

Will the dentures fit comfortably in my mouth?

The team at Comfort Care Dental strives to give you the best-fitting dentures possible. They have a specialized lab technician available to take impressions so your denture can be precisely created for you.

If you still have concerns about your dentures moving around in your mouth, ask your Comfort Care Dental dentist about your tooth replacement options. They offer implant-supported dentures, or dentures that root into your jawbone, so they’re held securely in place. For a nonremovable way to fill in your smile, don’t hesitate to ask about dental implants.
